Aston Villa supporters are backing their side to win at Newcastle United despite a league start that has left Villa 16th, with only five points from six matches. The confidence rests partly on Villa’s 2-0 win at St James’ Park in January, but their record there offers little reason to treat another victory as routine: it was their first away win at the ground in 21 years.
Villa have one league win so far, a 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur. Newcastle are three points ahead, so a win would take Villa above them. The gap gives Saturday’s trip a direct consequence in the table, even as Villa’s supporters debate whether their team can turn summer recruitment and individual talent into Premier League results.
On the Villa Talk message board, one supporter argued that Villa had “signed better players” over the summer, while acknowledging that Newcastle’s home form makes the fixture difficult. Another predicted a 4-1 Villa win. A more cautious fan questioned whether Villa could impose their quality in the league, writing: “Premier and Europe 2 different animals.”
The January result is a source of belief for some supporters, but their optimism comes with a condition. One fan said Villa would need to “keep up the intensity” if they scored first. The Mag reports that Newcastle are coming off a defeat to Coventry City, and that some Villa fans are already questioning the home side’s new coach and summer recruitment. Those views help explain the confidence, but they do not erase Villa’s own uneven start.
Villa also travel without Amadou Onana, Boubacar Kamara, Ian Maatsen and Matteo Ruggeri, while Ross Barkley is doubtful. That leaves the visitors needing to make their chances count if they are to build on the January win and turn supporter belief into points.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, 17 October, at 17:30 BST. For Villa, the opportunity is clear: beat a Newcastle side three points above them and climb past them. But with only one league win so far and a long history of difficulty at St James’ Park, confidence alone will not be enough.
