Kulusevski ends 526-day injury absence before Tottenham’s trip to Chelsea - SportInsight

Dejan Kulusevski’s first Tottenham appearance in 526 days came in the 86th minute of Monday’s 3-1 win over Coventry City. The Sweden international is back after a serious knee injury, but how much he can offer Spurs at Chelsea on Saturday is not yet clear.

Kulusevski’s last appearance before the comeback was against Crystal Palace in May 2025, when he damaged cartilage in his kneecap. Surgery was followed by post-operative complications and a second operation the following winter, extending his rehabilitation and keeping him out for 526 days.

After the Coventry match, Kulusevski told Sky Sports he felt “different, more wise” but was still the same person who loves football. He described the recovery as difficult and spoke about the importance of family support, as well as the loneliness of a long injury absence and having to rely on himself.

The return gives Tottenham an experienced option again, but the brief appearance offers no indication yet of the role he can play against Chelsea. Kulusevski has made one league appearance this season and has yet to record a goal or assist.

James Maddison also made his first Tottenham start since early May 2025 against Coventry. Manager Roberto De Zerbi said the pair bring different talents, experience and personalities, and that their presence changes the atmosphere in the dressing room. Maddison has scored twice in two league appearances this season.

The timing matters for a Spurs side sitting 16th after seven league games, with six points from one win, three draws and three defeats. They visit Chelsea on Saturday, 24 October, at 17:30 BST. Kulusevski’s return ends the wait for his first appearance; it does not yet establish how much he can contribute in that next fixture.
