Manchester United have real doubts about extending Lisandro Martinez’s contract, Sky Sports News reports, after the defender criticised the club’s leadership. His deal expires in the summer, and United hold a formal option to keep him for another year.

Martinez said he expected more from director of football Jason Wilcox and the club’s leadership, adding: “We expect more from the top, from upstairs, to bring in more players to compete.” Sky Sports News reports that United’s bosses have not decided whether to discipline him.

The comments have reportedly caused anger and bemusement in both the boardroom and dressing room. Sky Sports News says at least one team-mate challenged Martinez as the squad boarded its flight back to Manchester. The report also says other players were unhappy with the implication that they were not good enough to compete.

The contract uncertainty comes as United plan to reshape their defence. Sky Sports News reports the club are looking at centre-backs and left-backs, with defence set to be a priority in upcoming transfer windows. Martinez, 28, has wanted to leave for some time, the report says. He pushed for a move to Atletico Madrid last summer, but United received no suitable bid to consider.

Sky Sports News also reports that Martinez remains a key part of Michael Carrick’s squad, leaving United with a delicate decision as they weigh their contract option and recruitment plans. The outlet says a growing rift could create further problems for a defence already affected by injuries and suspension.

The report details several current pressures at the back: Luke Shaw is injured with no specified return date, while Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also absent with fitness issues. Leny Yoro faces a one-game European ban after being sent off against Atletico, and United are managing Harry Maguire’s game-time. Ayden Heaven started at left-back against Atletico.

United’s spending plans are also constrained, Sky Sports News’ Rob Dorsett said. The club reported record revenue of £678m alongside a £47m pre-tax loss and £70m in loan interest. Dorsett said United have prioritised different areas of the squad in successive windows, with defence next on the agenda. Whether Martinez stays through the club’s option or leaves remains unresolved, while United’s reported plans point to a broader defensive rebuild.
