Chelsea will be without captain Reece James for several weeks, starting with Saturday’s trip to Everton, after he underwent successful knee surgery. Manager Xabi Alonso has set no return date, leaving Chelsea without a key dressing-room leader as they begin a demanding spell of fixtures.
James injured his knee in training last Friday. Alonso said the club waited for test results before deciding on surgery, and confirmed that the operation was successful. “We are all disappointed, and especially for him,” he said. James had been hoping to make a strong start after the international break.
The absence carries a leadership cost as well as an on-pitch one. Alonso said James will stay close to the team during his recovery and described him as a major influence who is respected by his team-mates and takes responsibility naturally. Chelsea will support their captain, but must manage without him for several weeks with no timeline for his return.
James is not the only longer-term absence. Jamie Gittens is also expected to miss a few weeks after picking up an injury on England Under-21 duty. Alonso has not set a return date for the winger either.
Emmanuel Emegha is unavailable for the Everton match after feeling “a little thing” on Thursday. The 23-year-old, who joined from Strasbourg over the summer, has yet to make his Chelsea debut. Alonso expects him to train next week but said he is not yet fully fit to play.
Chelsea head to Merseyside after a 5-1 win over Bournemouth, with 10 points from six league games and sixth place in the table. It is their first trip away from London this season, and they will have to make it without James, Gittens and Emegha. James’s recovery has no fixed timetable; for now, Alonso’s task is to keep the team moving while two absences stretch into the coming weeks.
