Newcastle United are close to agreeing a new contract with Jacob Murphy that would run until 30 June 2028, according to The Mail’s Craig Hope. Hope reports that talks have accelerated and the winger is ready to sign improved terms, but the deal has not been reported as signed.
The proposed extension would add 12 months to Murphy’s current contract, which is due to expire in June 2027. It would take him beyond a decade at St James’ Park: Murphy joined Newcastle in 2017 under Rafa Benitez.
A new deal would not necessarily mean Murphy stays at Newcastle until 2028. The Mail reports that a longer contract would give the club the option of collecting a transfer fee if he leaves next summer. No fee for a potential departure has been reported.
Murphy’s future had looked uncertain during the summer 2026 transfer window. Everton were reported to be interested, while Nottingham Forest reportedly made at least two offers before the window closed. Their final bid was said to be £15 million.
The club’s preference for Murphy to stay was also reported against a backdrop of experience leaving the squad during the window. Matthias Jaissle was said to want the winger to remain, as he did with Joe Willock, whom Besiktas were trying to sign.
Newcastle are 11th in the Premier League after six games, with eight points, and are due to host Aston Villa on Saturday, 17 October. The reported progress in Murphy’s negotiations gives the club a route to keep him under contract for another season while preserving the possibility of a sale next summer. The next step is a signed agreement.
