Barcelona have reportedly agreed a contract extension with Marc Bernal through 2031, a deal that would make Liverpool’s interest in the midfielder much harder to pursue. The agreement has not yet been officially announced, and the reported €500 million release clause is not a fee Liverpool have been quoted.
Read Liverpool reports that the new deal is expected to include a release clause believed to be in the region of €500m. Transfer News Live said on October 13 that Bernal’s signature and an official announcement were the remaining steps. Read Liverpool expects the agreement to be formalised in the coming weeks.
The 18-year-old has made an impression under Barcelona manager Hansi Flick and is now a first-team player, according to Read Liverpool. The outlet says Liverpool’s interest in Bernal was confirmed by TEAMtalk. If the extension is completed on the reported terms, Barcelona would keep one of their highly regarded young midfielders under contract for several more seasons.
That would leave Liverpool looking elsewhere as they work to address a midfield need. Read Liverpool says the club signed four players in the summer but still have gaps to fill, with a new No.6 — a defensive midfielder tasked with shielding the back line — the priority. The outlet argues that a release clause near €500m would put Bernal beyond Liverpool’s reach.
Liverpool’s recruitment work is also taking place under a new sporting director. Julian Ward has replaced Richard Hughes, and Read Liverpool says Ward knows the club’s system and will be working to identify additions. The report frames the search as part of Andoni Iraola’s effort to fine-tune the squad across upcoming transfer windows.
The key distinction is that Barcelona’s reported agreement is not yet an officially announced renewal. But if Bernal signs the deal described in the reports, Liverpool’s search for a defensive midfielder is likely to turn toward other targets.
