Manchester United have reportedly earmarked Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler as a standout option if they decide to part ways with Michael Carrick, according to The Sun, as reported by Metro. The report says a change at Old Trafford is not imminent, but United’s start to the season has increased scrutiny on Carrick.
Carrick was appointed permanently over the summer after taking charge on an interim basis in January. Metro reported that no Premier League club earned more points than United after he took over last season. This campaign, however, has started poorly: United are winless in five matches in all competitions following Tuesday’s defeat to Atletico Madrid, and have won just two of their first nine games.
The pressure intensified after Lisandro Martinez criticised the club’s ambition and summer spending following the defeat in Madrid. Metro reported that Carrick needs positive results to ease the scrutiny. Hurzeler is being discussed as a possible alternative, not as an incoming appointment.
The 33-year-old joined Brighton in 2024 and has led them to consecutive eighth-place finishes. Brighton have made a strong start to this campaign, sitting third with 13 points from six games after beating Arsenal 3-0 before the international break. Arsenal are second on 15 points after six matches.
Hurzeler signed a new deal earlier this summer. Brighton owner Tony Bloom said last month that the club were prepared for the possibility of a wealthier side pursuing the head coach. “I never worry about losing anyone at the football club,” Bloom told The Argus. “I know these things will change over time, but we’re prepared for any eventuality.”
Former United midfielder Paul Scholes praised Hurzeler as “the real deal” but questioned whether he could handle the demands of Old Trafford. Scholes said the scrutiny at United is different, while noting Hurzeler’s Premier League experience as an advantage over Carrick. He also said Carrick “did okay” at Middlesbrough, though he thought the club expected more given its budget.
For now, Carrick remains in charge and Hurzeler is only a reported candidate. Brighton’s next game is at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday, October 18; United’s immediate focus is finding results to reduce the pressure on their manager.
