Manchester United are keeping Brighton head coach Fabian Hurzeler under consideration as a possible future manager, according to TEAMtalk, as cited by The Peoples Person. The report describes United sporting director Jason Wilcox as a confirmed admirer of the 33-year-old, but does not say the club has opened talks with him.
Hurzeler was firmly under consideration before INEOS chose to appoint Michael Carrick permanently, TEAMtalk reports. United continue to back Carrick for now, while Hurzeler is described as one of the leading options if the club decides to make another change.
The report’s timing comes amid scrutiny of United’s leadership following their 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid. The Peoples Person said Lisandro Martinez’s criticism of the hierarchy became a major talking point. Ahead of United’s visit to Leeds, Carrick played down suggestions of anger towards figures including Wilcox and described things at Carrington as business as usual, despite what the outlet called an underwhelming transfer window.
Brighton’s start to the league season is part of the appeal. They sit third after six matches with 13 points, four wins, one draw and one defeat, and a goal difference of plus 13. TEAMtalk reports they have scored more goals than any other Premier League side this season, including three without reply against Arsenal.
Brighton have a strong reason to resist any approach: Hurzeler’s contract runs until 2029 after an extension earlier this year. TEAMtalk says the club are determined to keep him and confident he will not be tempted away at this stage. The report also says Chelsea and Liverpool assessed Hurzeler before making their own managerial appointments; Chelsea are sixth after six games on 10 points.
For now, the reported interest leaves United with a potential alternative in mind rather than a confirmed managerial move. Carrick remains in charge at Old Trafford, and Brighton’s contract with Hurzeler gives the club security as United weigh their options.
