James Maddison’s first shot on target brought Tottenham a goal, a 3-1 win and an awkward celebration to explain. The midfielder scored against hometown club Coventry on his return to Spurs’ starting XI, then reportedly apologised for kissing the Tottenham badge after some home fans jeered him.
The reaction had a particular twist: Maddison has spoken about supporting Coventry. Some fans criticised the badge kiss, according to the Daily Mail, turning a routine bit of goal celebration into a question of footballing loyalties.
On the pitch, Maddison gave Tottenham a lively return. His goal came from Spurs’ first effort on target and had an expected-goals value of 0.05. Mohammed Kudus’ wing play helped create the chance, according to Spurs Web. It was Maddison’s first start since April 2025, and he played 69 minutes.
His contribution went beyond the finish. Maddison completed 87 per cent of his passes, made eight line-breaking passes and recorded six defensive contributions. Spurs Web also reported that he won all four of his ground duels. The numbers offered a reminder of the creative work he can bring to Tottenham, as well as the rather less complicated business of putting the ball in the net.
Tottenham went on to secure their first Premier League win of the season, scoring three times to beat Coventry 3-1. Maddison’s return to the starting XI was a central part of the story; the badge-kissing apology was the unexpected subplot.
The result leaves Spurs 16th and Coventry 17th, both on six points after seven games. Tottenham travel to Chelsea on Saturday, 24 October, while Coventry host Fulham that day. Maddison’s first start in months has given Spurs a win to build on—and Coventry fans a celebration to debate.
