James Maddison missed several days of training with a niggle during the international break, according to Spurs Web, leaving his readiness for Tottenham’s next match against Coventry uncertain. Spurs Web reports that manager De Zerbi disclosed the setback after the club had hoped the three-week break would help the midfielder return to full fitness. No firm return date has been reported, and the setback does not confirm that Maddison will miss Monday’s game.
The 29-year-old has yet to start a Premier League match this season. His last league start came in April last year, and Spurs Web reports he has since suffered two major injuries, including an ACL tear last summer. The report describes a recovery interrupted by further setbacks, rather than the consistent training Maddison needs to rebuild match sharpness.
Tottenham have had nine days to train between their 1-1 draw at Manchester United and the Coventry fixture, Spurs Web reports. That gives De Zerbi time to assess Maddison’s readiness, but the extra preparation period is not a confirmed comeback date. Tottenham host Coventry on Monday 19 October at 20:00 BST.
Maddison’s limited minutes have also shaped the defence of his form. Journalist Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider, in comments cited by Spurs Web, that criticism of the midfielder was “a bit harsh” because he had made only five substitute appearances this season. O’Rourke said Maddison was still working his way back to full fitness and match sharpness after missing almost a year with a serious injury and returning late last season.
Tottenham are not planning to sell Maddison in January, according to Football Insider, as reported by Spurs Web. The club reportedly still regard him as an important player and value the leadership he can bring to a squad that needs more leaders. O’Rourke also said he expects a fit Maddison to improve the team and believes the midfielder will want to prove his quality after his long spell out.
De Zerbi has Conor Gallagher as another midfield option, Spurs Web reports. Xavi Simons remains out with a cruciate ligament tear, while Dejan Kulusevski is doubtful after knee surgery, leaving Tottenham with fewer alternatives as Maddison works towards a return to starting contention. Spurs sit bottom of the table with three points from six games and are still seeking their first league win.
