Will Lankshear has scored 11 goals this season, yet Tottenham cannot simply bring their academy graduate back to north London. Spurs have a right to match a future offer accepted by Middlesbrough, rather than a buy-back clause—a distinction that leaves the striker’s next move dependent on Boro and Lankshear as well as his former club.
His latest goal came in Middlesbrough’s 2-2 draw with 10-man Coventry City. Lankshear, 21, has nine goals in 11 Championship appearances, playing 886 minutes. He has registered 26 shots, with 17 on target, and an average rating of 7.09. Spurs Web reported that his overall tally of 11 put him just behind Erling Haaland, who had 12 across all competitions at the same point, including four in the Champions League.
Those numbers have sharpened the focus on Tottenham’s decision to let a promising finisher go. Former Spurs striker Darren Bent criticised the move on talkSPORT and suggested “big club snobbery” may have been involved. “I’ve got no doubt whatsoever that if Middlesbrough get promoted or whoever goes up or there’s a team there, he’ll be playing in the Premier League,” Bent said. “He is more than good enough.”
But goals alone do not create a direct route back. According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham can match an offer only after Middlesbrough accepts it. The same update said Lankshear is enjoying life at Boro and wants to help the club win promotion, making an immediate return to Spurs unlikely.
The timing makes his form especially notable for Tottenham. Spurs sit 20th with three points from six league matches, having drawn three and lost three. Dominic Solanke has two goals in one league appearance this season, while Haaland has five league goals for Manchester City. Lankshear’s progress is therefore a pointed reminder of the finishing Tottenham have struggled to find during their difficult start, even if his all-competitions total is not directly comparable with those league figures.
Tottenham’s next fixture is at home to Coventry on Monday, 19 October. Lankshear’s future, however, is not simply theirs to decide: Middlesbrough would first need to accept an offer, and Spurs would then have to choose whether to match it.
