Chelsea’s two-goal lead arrived inside three minutes, the earliest such advantage in the club’s Premier League era. Jordan Henderson scored on his home debut, Morgan Rogers followed, and the Blues went on to beat Bournemouth 5-1 at Stamford Bridge.
The start gave Xabi Alonso’s side an immediate platform after the three-week international break, but it did not finish the job for them. Chelsea controlled much of the first half and extended their lead only a minute into the second, when João Pedro powered home after Pedro Neto’s work.
Bournemouth briefly made the game less comfortable. Evanilson pulled one back, and Alonso said Chelsea lost control for around eight minutes after conceding. The response was decisive: João Pedro scored his second from Pep Chavarría’s cross, before Henderson curled a 25-yard free-kick into the net to complete the scoring.
Alonso called it “a complete performance” and said Chelsea had been in control for most of the match. His qualification matters: the spell after Bournemouth’s goal showed how quickly a commanding scoreline can become less secure. Chelsea’s fourth goal restored the distance, and Henderson’s free-kick made the result emphatic.
Henderson’s contribution was not limited to his two finishes. Alonso praised what he called “a very good midfield performance”, highlighting Henderson’s involvement, the options he gave teammates and his communication with those around him. For Chelsea, that broader influence gives the brace extra weight: the midfielder shaped the game as well as finished it.
Rogers also scored in the opening burst. Alonso said the early goals were not the product of a specific plan, adding that Chelsea still had plenty to do after taking the lead. The result followed a disappointing display at Brentford before the international break, according to the manager’s post-match comments, making the control and attacking response a welcome change.
Bournemouth remain 17th with three points from six games and host Sunderland on 18 October. Chelsea’s next match is a local derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. After a five-goal win, Alonso will want the control he praised to last longer than the brief spell that followed Evanilson’s goal.
