Ryan Gravenberch will miss Liverpool’s trip to Brentford through suspension, forcing a change in midfield as the side prepares for another quick turnaround after its 6-3 Champions League win over LASK.
Gravenberch is serving a one-match league ban for the red card he received against Manchester City. Liverpool are also expected to rotate after playing in midweek, with a Premier League match against Brentford followed by Tuesday’s European fixture against Villarreal.
There may be options returning to the squad. Cody Gakpo, Alexander Isak and Dominik Szoboszlai could be available again after missing recent matches with injuries picked up on international duty. Their return would give Liverpool more choices, but none is confirmed to be fit for Saturday.
Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are back in contention after being ineligible for the LASK match. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain long-term absentees. The combination of Gravenberch’s ban and the tight schedule is likely to shape Liverpool’s selection.
Brentford have questions of their own. Kevin Schade and Jannik Schuster have trained after coming off injured in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. Head coach Keith Andrews said the pair would be assessed, so their involvement is not yet certain.
Andrews also said Nathan Collins, Mikkel Damsgaard and Sepp van den Berg were closer to returning. Van den Berg has yet to play this season, while the three are coming back from different injuries and at different stages. Josh Dailva, Kaye Furo and Antoni Milambo are also injured.
Brentford sit fourth with 10 points from six games and host Liverpool at 3pm BST on Saturday. Liverpool’s midfield options and the state of Brentford’s recovering players will both feed into the team selections, with the visitors balancing the league fixture against another European match just days later.
