Chelsea have scored 25 goals in an unbeaten start to the season, and Ellie Carpenter says the numbers reflect more than a prolific attack: this team is building its own identity. The right wing-back made that point with two goals in Sunday’s 6-2 victory over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have won eight of their ten matches, with Carpenter featuring in all ten. She now has three goals and three assists. Having joined from Lyon at the beginning of last season, the Australian said the side feels different from the one she first encountered.
“I would say it's like a new Chelsea,” Carpenter told Chelsea’s official website. “We're creating our own legacy, our own type of season this year. We're the 2026/27 Chelsea.” She called it “a new era” and stressed that the squad is working collectively and taking the campaign “game by game” rather than looking too far ahead.
The Tottenham result carried extra weight after a difficult build-up. Twenty Chelsea players had been away on international duty and returned only two days before the match. Head coach Sonia Bompastor identified the main challenge as “reconnecting quickly with the game model”.
The teams went into half-time level at 1-1, but Chelsea found another gear after the break, scoring five more times. Carpenter said teams can need time to regain their rhythm after an international break. She praised the variety of goalscorers and the impact of the substitutes, while also noting her own work in the final third: “I was very happy to score.”
Lauren James also scored twice, including a finish from a tight angle and another difficult second-half chance. Carpenter called the England forward an “incredible footballer” and said she loves watching her play. “She makes it look so easy,” Carpenter said.
The 25-goal tally and the range of scorers against Tottenham give substance to Carpenter’s description of a new Chelsea identity. But her message is not to get carried away: the team intends to keep building through its performances, one game at a time.
