Sávio will be out for “some weeks” and Lucas Bergvall for two weeks, Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi said, ruling both midfielders out of Monday’s home match against Coventry City. The update, given after Spurs’ warm-weather training in Marbella, leaves De Zerbi without two players as his side prepare for a fixture with added importance in their early-season push.
De Zerbi told football.london, in comments reported by Spurs Web, that Sávio felt a muscular problem on Tuesday before the squad left for Marbella. “We have lost him for some weeks,” he said.
Bergvall’s injury came earlier, in Manchester. De Zerbi said the midfielder felt pain in his knee during the move that created an early chance for Dominic Solanke. Bergvall initially felt fine, the manager said, but came to the training ground on Sunday and will now be out for two weeks.
The new absences add to a group of five players De Zerbi identified as sidelined: Mykhailo Mudryk, Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons. De Zerbi had previously said Porro was close to full fitness and that Mudryk was not expected to be out much longer. Kulusevski had been making progress and could return against Coventry, while Odobert was expected back later in the year and Simons early next year.
Tottenham have had nine days to prepare for Coventry, including a training camp in Marbella. They enter the match 20th in the Premier League with three points from six games. Coventry arrive after winning their last two outings, scoring five goals and conceding once, Spurs Web reported.
The Coventry game begins a run of three home fixtures in Tottenham’s next four league matches. Chelsea visit on October 24 and Crystal Palace on October 31, leaving De Zerbi with limited time to recover his squad before that sequence. For Monday, though, his immediate challenge is reshaping the midfield without Sávio and Bergvall.
