Manchester United’s left-back search has a possible new route: David Raum has confirmed there have been no intensive contract talks with RB Leipzig, while United reportedly monitor the German ahead of a potential January move. No deal is agreed, and Raum has not said he is leaving.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Raum said there had been no intensive discussions with Leipzig “neither before the season nor now”. He added that communication had “started to get going a little recently”. Raum also said he would continue to lead by example through his performances and mentality “until my very last day here in Leipzig”, whatever happens after that.
That leaves Leipzig with time to reopen negotiations, but Raum’s contract is entering its final year. United are reportedly hoping that could create an opportunity to sign him for a reduced fee in January or on a free transfer next summer. Those are possibilities, not an agreed plan between the clubs or a confirmed exit.
The interest comes after Lewis Hall signed a new contract with Newcastle United and made clear he wants to stay. United had reportedly considered Hall as an option, and now Raum is among the left-backs they are monitoring. The need for cover was exposed when United travelled to face Atlético Madrid in the Champions League without a natural left-back, according to The Peoples Person. Luke Shaw is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s away match against Leeds United.
Raum’s attacking output is the clearest contrast with Shaw in the figures cited for 2025/26. Raum recorded three goals, nine assists and 111 key passes in 34 appearances. Shaw had one goal, two assists and 19 key passes in 43 appearances. Those numbers point to a more productive creator in Raum, though they do not by themselves establish how he would fit at United or whether Leipzig will let him go.
United sit 13th with six points from six league games, and their left-back options have become a live squad concern. Raum’s comments keep a possible move in play, but the next signal may come from Leipzig: whether its recently renewed communication leads to a new contract or leaves the door open for United.
