Newcastle’s bid for an eighth straight win over Coventry was under serious pressure after two defensive errors left the Magpies trailing 2-0 by the 60th minute. Rudoni converted an early penalty before teenage striker Cherif struck soon after the restart, giving the hosts a lead with real weight in the table as well as the rivalry’s history.

The first goal came when Newcastle goalkeeper Lukáš Horníček brought down Cherif in the area. Rudoni sent Horníček the wrong way from 12 yards to put Coventry ahead.

Newcastle had a clear chance to level just before half-time. Matias Fernandez-Pardo ran onto Nico González’s through ball, rounded Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, but Bobby Thomas blocked his shot on the line. That missed opportunity mattered: Coventry doubled their advantage within three minutes of the restart.

Newcastle could not clear a long throw-in, and Cherif drove a low shot into the bottom-right corner. Coventry had turned pressure from a set-piece situation into a second goal, while Newcastle were left needing to chase the match.

The score sharpened the stakes for both clubs. Coventry began the match 19th with three points from five games; Newcastle were 11th on eight. Newcastle had lost only once in their previous 13 meetings with Coventry and were targeting an eighth successive win over the Sky Blues. Their last top-flight meeting, in January 2001, ended 3-1 to Newcastle.

Newcastle made three changes around the hour, with Bazoumana Touré, Joelinton and Amar Dedić coming on. But at 2-0, history offered no substitute for a response on the pitch. The match was still in progress.
