Conte reportedly offers to take charge at Manchester United immediately

Antonio Conte has reportedly told Manchester United he is ready to take over immediately, putting a potential successor directly into the conversation as Michael Carrick faces mounting pressure. But United have not opened formal talks, and the club’s current position is still to back Carrick.

TEAMtalk reports that intermediaries contacted United on Conte’s behalf to confirm his availability. The Italian was also keen on the job during the summer, when people working for him held discussions with director of football Jason Wilcox. Conte is confident he could turn things around at Old Trafford, according to the report.

The approach lands against a difficult start for United. They have six points from six Premier League matches, with one win, three draws and two defeats, and sit 13th. Their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur last weekend was followed by a 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid. The canonical report describes this as United’s worst start to a top-flight campaign in 40 years.

For now, that poor run has not led to formal discussions with Conte or an announced change in the club’s plans. United were previously reported to be standing by Carrick, though that support could shift if results and performances do not improve. Conte’s reported availability changes the situation from speculation about a possible replacement to a direct offer from a manager seeking the role—but it does not mean United have begun a search or made a decision.

Conte is not the only name being linked with the position. Fabian Hürzeler is described as the standout Premier League candidate, while Julian Nagelsmann is available after leaving the Germany national-team set-up and has an admirer in Christopher Vivell. Conte is also reportedly keen to manage in the Premier League again.

United’s next league match is away to Leeds United on Sunday, 18 October. The result will arrive with Conte’s reported offer in the background, while Carrick remains backed for now. The immediate question for United is whether the team can improve quickly enough to keep that stance in place.
