Moisés Caicedo was involved in both of Chelsea’s first two goals on his return to action against Bournemouth, then left the pitch to a standing ovation as the Blues won 5-1. The midfielder says he wants to keep learning and developing at the club after his first notable spell on the sidelines during his Chelsea career.

Within 35 seconds of kick-off, Caicedo controlled a bouncing ball and drew a foul, Chelsea’s account of the match reported. He then played forward to Cole Palmer, whose run set up Jordan Henderson to open the scoring. Soon after, Caicedo won the ball from Ryan Christie near Bournemouth’s box; Morgan Rogers collected the loose ball and doubled Chelsea’s lead.

Caicedo came off in the 72nd minute, shortly after Chelsea went 5-1 up. The club said no player in the match won more tackles or had a higher pass-completion rate. His return followed an absence at the start of the season, which Chelsea described as the first of note in his more than three years at the club.

Chelsea also pointed to Caicedo’s broader contribution since arriving in 2023: according to the club, he has won possession more times than any other Premier League player in that period, while only two players have made more tackles and interceptions. Those figures help explain why his return matters beyond one result.

“It has been a great journey for me, more than three special years at one of the best clubs in the world,” Caicedo said in an interview with Chelsea. He said difficult moments in his first season helped him grow, and added: “I have more experience now, I’m more mature, and I just want to keep learning and keep doing what I’m doing.”

The 24-year-old is part of Chelsea’s leadership group. He said coaches have encouraged him to communicate more on the pitch, though he tries to lead through his performances and takes inspiration from former Chelsea defender Thiago Silva. “Now being one of the captains is a pleasure for me, and a special feeling for my family,” he said.

Manager Xabi Alonso has called Caicedo “one of the best holding players in the world”, according to the club interview. Caicedo said the praise motivates him, that he expects to keep developing under Alonso, and that he feels confident of winning silverware with the manager.

He also spoke about the support he receives from Chelsea fans, including supporters in Ecuador. Caicedo called the renovation of a community football pitch in Guayaquil a proud moment and said the club’s work there helped open the door for Chelsea in his home country. “I can say Chelsea is my home,” he said.

Chelsea are sixth with 10 points from six league games and next visit Everton on Saturday, 17 October. Bournemouth, 18th with three points, host Sunderland the following day.
