Newcastle United can call on Dan Burn and Joelinton again, but Matthias Jaissle says the return of two experienced leaders must help his side respond to Monday’s disappointment at Coventry. Both players are back in the squad after the international break ahead of Aston Villa’s visit to St James’ Park.
Jaissle said in a statement on Newcastle’s website that the club would make “no excuses” for what happened at Coventry. He said Newcastle controlled much of the game and created chances, but did not do enough and made it too easy for their opponents in front of goal.
The manager also thanked the supporters who travelled to Coventry. Their backing, he said, “only added to our pain” when they went home disappointed. Jaissle said the team had used the week to learn from the setback and focus on where it needs to improve.
Burn and Joelinton give Newcastle extra experience at a time when Jaissle described the squad as young and adapting through a period of transition. He said both players bring quality and leadership, while their knowledge of the Premier League can help younger teammates through difficult spells. Newcastle will manage their minutes carefully; each has made one league appearance this season.
Jaissle said there was still “a lot we can feel encouraged by” from his first two months at the club, despite the ups and downs he expects during the season. His message is that the team must stick together in difficult moments and use them to learn and grow.
Villa provide the next test. They arrive 16th with five points from six games, having recorded one win, two draws and three defeats. Jaissle called them a good opponent and said Newcastle must return to the level they have shown this season, particularly at St James’ Park.
The match is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, at 17:30 BST. Burn and Joelinton’s return gives Jaissle more options and leadership, but he has made clear that Newcastle need to turn the frustration at Coventry into a stronger performance at home.
