Brighton scored three times inside the opening ten minutes and finished with a 5-0 win over Crystal Palace, moving to second in the Premier League with 16 points from seven games. Diego Gómez’s 52-metre strike was the standout goal of a derby that was nearly over before it had properly begun.
Jaydee Canvot’s own goal opened the scoring. Gómez then spotted goalkeeper Walter Benítez out of position and struck from just inside Palace’s half. Yasin Ayari added Brighton’s third after nine minutes and 30 seconds, the earliest a team had scored three goals in the league since April 2023, according to Brighton’s match report.
Gómez’s effort was the longest-distance Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney scored from 52 metres in 2017, the club said. Brighton went into half-time 3-0 ahead and extended the lead four minutes after the break, when Charalampos Kostoulas reacted quickest after Ayari’s shot was blocked.
Palace had a chance to pull one back through Jean-Philippe Mateta, but his effort struck the crossbar. Jack Hinshelwood completed the scoring in the 84th minute, making this the first time in 70 years Brighton had scored five against Palace.
The result was Brighton’s sixth successive win, according to the club, and leaves them second on 16 points. Palace are 14th with seven points and have been beaten away in the league for the first time since their opening game.
Both sides return to action on 25 October. Brighton travel to Liverpool, while Palace host Newcastle United. Brighton take a five-goal derby win into a difficult away fixture; Palace will look to respond at home.
