Brighton believe Luka Vuskovic could become a £100m player after signing the defender from Tottenham for £46m this summer, Football Insider reports. The figure is a projection, not a confirmed offer, and Brighton are reportedly under no pressure to sell the 19-year-old.
Football Insider says Brighton’s decision-makers view Vuskovic as a major long-term asset and are relaxed about his future. Bayern Munich continue to monitor the centre-back, according to the report, while Spurs Web says Bayern, Barcelona and Chelsea have all shown interest. Bayern’s long-standing admiration reportedly grew after Vuskovic’s performances on loan at Hamburg in the Bundesliga.
Vuskovic has made six Premier League appearances for Brighton, playing 528 minutes and scoring once, according to figures published by Spurs Web. Those figures also credit him with seven tackles, five blocks, three interceptions and 36 duels won, with no yellow cards and an average rating of 7.52.
His move came as Tottenham signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52m, despite the defender having one year left on his contract, Spurs Web reports. Van Hecke has also played six league matches and scored once, in 540 minutes. He has recorded 11 tackles, seven blocks, seven interceptions and five key passes, with two yellow cards and an average rating of 7.55.
The early numbers have prompted questions about whether Tottenham would have been better off keeping Vuskovic, but they do not establish what either player will deliver over the longer term. The reported £100m valuation instead signals how highly Brighton are said to rate the defender—and why the club is not being portrayed as eager to cash in.
Spurs Web reports that Vuskovic was widely understood to be unconvinced he would get enough opportunities at Tottenham under Roberto De Zerbi, despite the coach telling him he valued him. De Zerbi’s stated position was that no player could be guaranteed a starting place. In July, speaking about Djed Spence and Lucas Bergvall, he said: “I would like you to stay if you want to stay. If you don’t want to stay, if you want to leave, you have to leave.” He added that players who stayed had to accept his decisions on the pitch.
Brighton are third after six league matches, with 13 points and a goal difference of +13. Their next fixture is at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday, 18 October, as Vuskovic’s first Premier League season continues amid reported interest from several major clubs.
