Roma will turn to Pierluigi Gollini in goal against Como after Gian Piero Gasperini said Mile Svilar is expected to miss at least a month with a fracture in his little finger. The coach said Svilar will probably need until after the next international break to recover, leaving Gollini with the chance to cover during a demanding stretch for Roma.
Gasperini said Svilar sustained a stress fracture at the bottom of the finger in training about a week before the coach spoke to reporters. Svilar had recovered from bruising after a clash with Inter and was training normally, Gasperini said. Roma are assessing whether to insert a screw to strengthen the fracture.
Gollini will replace him for Roma’s trip to Como. Gasperini called the goalkeeper an “excellent second goalkeeper” and said he had the ability and quality to play regularly. He added that Gollini had trained well and was not a goalkeeper without previous experience. The coach said the opportunity would give Gollini a chance to perform consistently.
The timing matters beyond this one fixture: Gasperini said Roma have nine games in 27 days and plans to rotate players on the flanks and in other positions. He also said Lorenzo Pellegrini had fully recovered and was ready to play, giving Roma another option as the schedule intensifies.
Gasperini described Roma as in form and playing with confidence before facing Como. He praised Cesc Fabregas’s side, saying their results had earned them the acclaim they receive and that they are challenging for the top spots. Both teams can change their tactical approach, he said, but he did not view that as the decisive factor.
For Roma, the immediate task is to handle Svilar’s absence while keeping their momentum through a busy run of matches. Gollini now has the chance to establish himself in goal as the club waits for Svilar’s recovery.
