Starting Nick Woltemade and Randal Kolo Muani together against Lazio may give Juventus more up front from the first whistle—but Luciano Spalletti says it would leave him with less attacking force to change the game. That trade-off is central to the coach’s selection thinking ahead of the seventh-round match.
“If I play both, I’ll have less impact when I want to change something,” Spalletti said at his pre-match press conference. He rejected a strict starters-versus-substitutes divide, arguing that Juventus need to think more broadly about who can influence the match. Kolo Muani, Woltemade and Nico González are all options who could bring force from the bench, while Federico Gatti is also part of the decision.
Woltemade’s recent outings have added weight to the debate. Spalletti said the forward was surprised by what he encountered at Cagliari, then scored against Celta in Vigo. The coach praised his readiness to take his chance, but did not say whether he would start alongside Kolo Muani.
Edon Zhegrova is another contender. Spalletti said the winger’s unpredictable movement causes problems for opponents and that he deserves more minutes for what he has shown. Jérémie Boga, meanwhile, has about 30 minutes in his legs, according to the coach. But a front line featuring two strikers, Zhegrova and Nuno Tavares would need to work defensively too: Spalletti warned Juventus could otherwise be outnumbered.
The choice is not only about attacking combinations. Juventus began their recovery at 4:30am after travelling, and the next day was limited to a walk-through because some players do not sleep on planes. Spalletti said the team had done no physical work on either of the previous two days. He also explained that performance data can lead him to leave out a player who is in form but tired.
With Khéphren Thuram missing, Spalletti described Sarr as a versatile alternative who can organise play, make forward runs and win the ball back. He said Sarr shares characteristics with Thuram and Weston McKennie.
Juventus are seventh with 11 points from six games: three wins, two draws and one defeat. Spalletti praised Lazio as “a very dangerous team” and highlighted Gennaro Gattuso’s work, as well as Davide Frattesi’s ability to make an impact. Against that opponent, the verdict is clear: Juventus must weigh early attacking power against the substitutions that may be needed later.
