Real Madrid are favourites, but Roma’s attacking numbers and aggressive pressing point to a match with chances at both ends. The risk for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side is that every space created by its press gives Madrid’s forwards room to strike on the break.
The betting prices make Madrid the likelier winner without treating the trip as a formality: a Roma victory is priced at 3.45-3.75, the draw at 3.90-4.00 and a Real win at 1.90-2.02. Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals are each around 1.36-1.42. Those are market expectations, not guarantees; the preview’s leading score prediction is 2-1 to Madrid, with 2-2 the main alternative.
Roma’s Serie A figures explain why the home side has a route into the game. They average 20.6 shots, seven on target and 2.56 expected goals per match. Madrid’s Liga averages are also strong: 17.9 shots, 7.1 on target and 2.49 expected goals. The preview projects 25-30 attempts in total, with 9-12 on target.
The key tactical question is whether Roma’s man-to-man press can disrupt Madrid without exposing too much space behind it. Roma had 58 per cent possession and 91 per cent passing accuracy in their 1-1 draw with Fenerbahçe, but Madrid showed against Inter that they do not need to dominate the ball: they won 2-1 with 39 per cent possession. Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham give Madrid the threat to punish a press that is beaten.
Roma arrive unbeaten in Serie A and third with 14 points from six matches. Their latest league game ended 0-0 at Como, where they played much of the second half a player down. Bryan Cristante and Mile Svilar are out, and Pierluigi Gollini is listed to start in goal.
Roma’s next league fixture is at home to Genoa on 17 October, but first comes a sharper test of the team’s balance. If the press produces chances without leaving Madrid a clear route forward, Roma can make the contest competitive; if it is bypassed, the visitors’ transition threat could decide the game.
