Villarreal’s speed on the attack is the threat Napoli must contain, according to Rafa Marín. The defender knows the Spanish side from his season there and expects a difficult Champions League meeting against his former club.
“They have quality players and are very quick,” Marín said ahead of the game, describing the match as intense. His warning is specific: Napoli need to be alert when Villarreal break forward, rather than allowing their pace to turn possession into danger.
Marín also pointed to Villarreal’s display against Borussia Dortmund. Villarreal lost, but he said they played well, kept attacking and showed the level they can reach in Europe. That performance, in his view, makes them a serious test for Napoli even when the result does not go their way.
The fixture is personal for Marín. He said he was pleased to return to the club, which welcomed him warmly, and called last season an important part of his development. He has since returned to Napoli feeling more mature. He has also spoken with former teammates, though he hopes they do not take a positive result from the meeting.
For Napoli, the challenge comes after a win over Frosinone. They are eighth in Serie A with 10 points from six games, but the immediate focus is a European opponent Marín knows well. Their next league fixture is away to Venezia on Saturday, 17 October.
Marín says Napoli’s system matters less than how the team performs within it. He is comfortable in the three-defender shape and finds regular playing time gratifying. He would also like to score for Napoli, but his clearest contribution against Villarreal may be helping the defence stay ready for the counterattack. His familiarity offers Napoli useful context; containing the pace will still depend on the team’s execution.
