Scott McTominay has two years left on his Napoli contract, but the club is already working on a renewal. Sporting director Giovanni Manna says both the Scotland midfielder and Napoli want him to stay; agreeing the financial terms is the remaining obstacle.
“Scott has two years on his contract, he wants to stay with us and we want to keep him,” Manna told Sky before Napoli’s Champions League match against Villarreal. He called McTominay probably Napoli’s most important player for what he has done over the past two years, then added that there was “an economic balance to find” and the club was working on it.
That leaves Napoli with a clear preference but no immediate contract deadline. The two years still remaining give the club time, while Manna’s comments make clear that a new deal depends on finding terms that work financially. He also said Napoli were glad to have McTominay back, without setting out a timetable for negotiations.
The renewal is one part of a wider assessment of the squad. Manna said rotation was necessary and described Napoli’s group as balanced, while noting that three or four players are difficult to replace when fit. He also said Giovane was in good condition and gave the team more options. The forward has one league assist and no goals this season.
Manna’s comments came against a demanding European backdrop. He said Napoli needed to improve their Champions League away record, noting that it had been a long time since their last away win in the competition. He described Villarreal as a strong opponent and said Napoli wanted to progress in Europe, but stressed that qualifying through the league was fundamental.
That domestic priority is pressing: Napoli are eighth after six league games, with 10 points. Their next league test is away to Venezia on 17 October. Manna also said the club would review the squad’s composition at the end of the season, pointing to the number of players getting older. For now, the immediate McTominay question is not how soon his contract expires, but whether Napoli and the midfielder can agree on the economics of keeping him longer.
