Mastantuono’s hand surgery will not keep him out of Fiorentina’s Como match

Franco Mastantuono has had surgery on a fractured left hand, but Fiorentina expect him to be available for Sunday’s home match against Como. The procedure is not set to cost the Argentine the next league fixture: the club says he will return to group activity the following day.

Fiorentina confirmed that Mastantuono underwent an outpatient operation to reduce and fix a fracture of the fourth metacarpal. He suffered the injury after a blow during the league defeat to Genoa. In its medical update, the club said he would “resume regular activity with the group” from the next day and be “fully available for the next league fixture.”

Calciomercato.com reported that Mastantuono may use a brace on his return. Fiorentina have confirmed his availability, but have not said whether he will start against Como. The immediate assessment is therefore straightforward: surgery, but no planned spell out of the squad.

That is important for a side short of points. Fiorentina sit 19th after six matches, with four points from one win, one draw and four defeats, and a goal difference of minus seven. Their latest result was the loss to Genoa, the game in which Mastantuono sustained the fracture.

Como visit the Stadio Artemio Franchi on Sunday, 18 October, with kick-off at 15:00 CEST. Mastantuono’s expected return avoids another confirmed absence for Fiorentina, but it does not resolve the club’s other availability problems: Fabiano Parisi is out with a knee injury, Riccardo Sottil with a back injury, and Atta is doubtful with an abdominal strain.

For Fiorentina, the distinction between being available and starting matters. The club’s update puts Mastantuono in contention for a match they need points from, while leaving the decision on his role against Como open.
