Inter have 16 points from six Serie A games, but sit 25th in the Champions League league-phase standings after losing 2-1 to Real Madrid. That gap between domestic pace and European position gives their meeting with Club Brugge at San Siro a clear purpose: Inter need their first win to get their campaign moving.
Cristian Chivu’s side arrive in Milan after a 3-0 victory over Parma, with goals from Petar Sucic, Hakan Calhanoglu from the penalty spot and Marcus Thuram. Inter had 59 per cent possession and created 2.36 expected goals in that match. They also beat Udinese 5-3 during their recent run, and have won four of their last five games in all competitions, scoring 13 goals and conceding eight. The defeat in Madrid is the only loss in that stretch.
The problem for Inter is that their league form has not yet translated to Europe. A loss to Real Madrid leaves them three places below Club Brugge, even though the Belgian side also started the league phase with a defeat: 3-2 against Aston Villa. Both teams are chasing their first points, so this is a chance for Inter to turn a strong domestic start into a more useful European position.
Club Brugge come to Milan with four wins in their last five matches and nine goals scored, though they have conceded six. Their recent results include a 4-1 away win over RAAL La Louvière. That run gives them a platform to threaten, but their European defeat means they face the same immediate need as Inter: a response after opening night.
Chivu has said European success is earned by turning dreams into responsibility, not bought with money. The test now is practical. Inter need points, not just the confidence of leading Serie A, before they return to league action away to Bologna on Saturday, October 17. A first Champions League win would give the leaders a foothold in a campaign that has started behind their domestic pace.
