Inter have seven Champions League matches to make the most of in pursuit of qualification, but Cristian Chivu is wary of turning ambition into a declared target. His message ahead of the Club Brugge match is clear: push as far as possible, while keeping the work and the demands of the schedule in view.
Inter are coming off a defeat to Real Madrid, and a win against Brugge would help them restart their push for the last 16. Chivu described Brugge as a team with a clear identity that likes to play on the front foot, and warned that no Champions League match is easy. Inter, he said, need energy, determination and the right attitude.
Chivu was careful when asked whether the Champions League is a dream or an opportunity. Calling it a dream, he said, risks making it sound like a defined club target. He wants Inter to have the ambition to go as far as they can, but stressed that reaching a major trophy depends on the work and the journey, not simply on wanting it.
That measured approach also applies to selection. Chivu said Inter have a strong squad and pointed to the different choices made for the Parma match. With games coming every three days, he expects contributions from across the group and said players’ physical condition must not be put at risk. The schedule makes squad depth more than a talking point: it is part of how Inter can pursue qualification without overloading individuals.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu was among those Chivu addressed directly. The coach said the midfielder is well after taking a small knock and using ice, and insisted his value should not be questioned. He added that his management of the player will depend on what the team needs.
Chivu also praised Alessandro Bastoni, describing him as an important asset for both Inter and Italy, and said the defender had nothing to prove. Meanwhile, he noted that Djed Spence is improving in condition and confidence after physical problems affected his early part of the season.
Inter enter the Brugge challenge top of Serie A with 16 points from six matches and an unbeaten 5-1-0 record. Turning that strong domestic start into progress in Europe now depends on taking points across the seven-match run while keeping the squad ready for the demands ahead.
