Milan’s substitutions turned a 3-0 lead over Atalanta into 20 minutes of pressure, according to Calciomercato.com, which praised Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup but criticised his management of the game from the bench. Milan won 3-2, but the report argued that the changes helped give Atalanta room to attack and left Milan short of confidence as the match wore on.
Amorim’s approach had disrupted Atalanta for much of the contest. Calciomercato.com described Ramos and Christian Pulisic switching positions, Luka Modric dropping deeper and Adrien Rabiot covering ground across the pitch. Milan’s defensive line also moved between a back four and a back three, leaving Atalanta without clear reference points.
The outlet’s main concern came when Milan were three goals ahead. Amorim introduced Pervis Estupinan, Ardon Jashari and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Calciomercato.com argued that the substitutions opened up space for Atalanta and that Milan’s players lost certainty under the resulting pressure. It singled out Estupinan’s positioning and build-up play for criticism.
The report also questioned whether Hutchinson is tactically ready for matches at this level, despite his strong performance against Salzburg. At the same time, it credited Amorim with helping players such as Musah and Chukwueze and keeping the squad involved rather than relying on a small group of regular starters.
That willingness to make changes has brought rewards before: Calciomercato.com pointed to Milan’s matches against Torino, Lazio and Juventus as occasions when Amorim’s decisions worked. Its concern is that an attacking adjustment can also unsettle the team when the game calls for control. The outlet noted that Milan are playing every three days, but argued that managing the score and the tactical demands of a match still matters.
Milan are seventh after six league games, with 12 points and an unbeaten record. Rabiot has scored twice and provided an assist in his two league appearances. Amorim’s next test is away to Udinese on Sunday, 25 October, at 20:45 CET: the challenge is to retain the flexibility that helped Milan take control without allowing a comfortable lead to become a late struggle.
